Drive, drive and keep driving

Well now, people of the world, if you have not yet watched the film Drive, go and see it as a matter of urgency. I never want to see anything else ever again. Or listen to anything but the soundtrack. From a year of drought, when it comes to being moved or inspired by something, I feel like I'm in a flood and I'm overwhelmed. Who ever wants to do anything but make work like that?

Now, let's just start with the concept. One of the greatest experiences of growing up, after sex, is the ability to drive. Feeling lost? Just drive. Feeling happy? Drive. Feeling like you want to run away? Drive. Drive and keep driving with the volume up and the road ahead. Have you ever felt more free than when you get in a car for no reason at all than to just drive? And so to begin with, what a great bloody title, what a great concept. It makes you feel like you're in your car, late at night with a tune blaring within it's first second. And not only that, these are tunes that appear to have been sent direct from the god named 'audio gold, for your listening pleasure'.

And then you spend two hours (or under), mesmerised and utterly engrossed. You don't even get that feeling you often get of wanting to get to the point or work out what happens. All you want to do is watch and watch and watch. And you only want to watch Ryan Gosling. It's not possible to take your eyes off him when he's on screen for long enough to register what anyone else is doing. The film as I remember it in my head is Ryan Gosling giving the performance of not just his career, but everyone else's, with the odd moment where another face fills the screen. And that's not to say I didn't follow the story, I did, and it's great. But it's not the point. The photography, the performance and the music are like one long poem. You don't care about anything except that you feel so much and you can't tear your eyes away. That is a rarity. A glorious one.

Go and see it, I promise you, you won't want to be anywhere else.

And the one sided love affair with Ryan Gosling gathers pace...
