Conversations with Van Gogh - The Disservice
VG: And which picture is this supposed to be?
HS: The Sun Flowers.
VG: Oh. That one.
Silence.
HS: For me the flowers are alive and there is something sinister in the way they move. I feel like if I take my eye away from the picture they will have moved whilst I wasn’t looking until finally they are strangling me.
VG: Mmmm. It’s interesting that they are so dark for you. However, you are not showing that sinister edge in the movement.
HS: Well we are not supposed to be doing the meaning of the painting but the composition of it.
VG: So why are you focusing on the meanings in your studies?
HS: Because I don’t know what I am doing. I am so confused.
VG: Well you are doing me a disservice because I don’t recognise myself at all.
